The Spark — How the Wax & Willow Story Began

How Wax & Willow began

Ursula Stockley, founder of Wax & Willow, hand-pouring a candle in her West Sussex studio

There are moments in life that stay with us forever — not because of what we saw or heard, but because of what we smelled.

The scent of freshly cut grass on a summer afternoon. A favourite perfume worn by someone we love. The unmistakable aroma of a kitchen filled with baking on a Sunday morning.

Long before Wax & Willow existed, I was fascinated by the way fragrance could instantly change how a space felt. How a memory could be unlocked by a single scent. That fascination became the spark behind everything we now create from our small hand-poured candle studio in West Sussex.

Unlike many luxury products, fragrance has the remarkable ability to be both deeply personal and wonderfully shared. It can transform a room, create atmosphere, encourage relaxation, and tell a story without saying a word.

A love of beautiful spaces

My background has always involved a passion for interiors, hospitality, and creating environments that make people feel welcome.

I've always believed that a home should engage all of the senses. We carefully choose colours, fabrics, furniture and artwork — yet scent is often treated as an afterthought.

For me, fragrance became the missing layer. The finishing touch that turns a beautiful room into a memorable experience.

Creating Wax & Willow

What began as curiosity quickly became obsession.

I spent countless hours learning about fragrance composition, waxes, vessels, reeds, essential oils and perfumery. I became fascinated by the craftsmanship behind products that appear effortless.

The more I learned, the more I realised that truly exceptional home fragrance requires far more than simply pouring wax into a jar. Three principles became non-negotiable:

  • Every ingredient matters — from the soy wax to the lead-free cotton wick to the IFRA-compliant fragrance oils.

  • Every design choice matters — vessel shape affects burn quality; label placement affects how it sits in your home.

  • Every fragrance tells a story — we build scents around moments, not just notes.

Wax & Willow was born from the belief that beautiful fragrance, elegant design, and thoughtful craftsmanship belong together — not as a luxury few, but as a daily ritual anyone can enjoy.

More than a candle

People often think they're buying a candle. In reality, they're buying a feeling:

  • A sense of calm after a busy day

  • The atmosphere just before guests arrive

  • A moment of stillness on a quiet morning

  • A reminder of a favourite place

  • A memory worth holding onto

That is what continues to inspire everything we create. Because fragrance isn't simply something we smell — it's something we experience. And often, it's something we remember forever.
